Social workers in schools (SWis)

WHat is the swis programme about

Social Workers in Schools (SWIS) are the social workers who work within the 12 schools Te Aka Ora Support in partnership with MSD and MOE.
SWIS are an integral link between school, home, and community in helping students achieve academic success. They work directly with whanau, students and school administration, providing support and behaviour development programmes for young people and their whanau, to ensure the young person is well supported in both the home and school environments.

SWIS workers also provide guidance and support to leadership in forming school discipline policies, mental health intervention, crisis management, and support services. As part of an interdisciplinary team to help students succeed, school social workers also facilitate community involvement in the schools while advocating for student success.
Our community and social workers have many years of experience providing individualised plans to support children and families who have diverse needs.  We work in schools across Gisborne urban area and western rural schools.
